What the App Store's top earners teach you about building an app
The highest-earning and fastest-growing apps on the App Store, with published estimates, the patterns behind their success and how to apply them to your own app.
Why study the top charts at all
Most apps will never come close to the revenue of TikTok or ChatGPT, and that is fine. The reason to study the top charts is not to copy the giants but to understand what millions of people have already proven they will pay for, and how the best teams in the world structure the path from install to subscription. Those lessons transfer to an app with ten thousand users as much as to one with a hundred million.
This page collects published estimates from Appfigures and App Radar, groups the leaders by category and explains the product and business patterns behind them. Every number shows the month it refers to and the source that published it. Where no revenue figure has been published, we show the app's US top-grossing rank instead of inventing a number.
Inside Muaz.io, the same data powers the Top Charts screen in the dashboard, where you can filter by category, compare apps and save any app's patterns to your own project's inspiration board with one tap.

The highest-earning apps in 2026
Appfigures publishes a monthly estimate of the world's highest-earning apps across the App Store and Google Play. Revenue is net, meaning after Apple and Google take their fees. Here are the figures it has stated in writing for early and mid 2026.
| App | Category | Net revenue estimate | Month |
|---|---|---|---|
| TikTok | Entertainment | about $300M | May 2026 |
| ChatGPT | Productivity | about $201M | May 2026 |
| YouTube | Photo & Video | about $142M | February 2026 |
| Google One | Utilities | about $94M | May 2026 |
| Tinder | Lifestyle | about $90M | February 2026 |
| Duolingo | Education | about $70M | January 2026 |
Appfigures also reported that the ten highest-earning apps together made about $1.22 billion in net revenue in May 2026, and that Disney+, HBO Max and Peacock combined earned about $231 million in February 2026. Months differ by app because each figure is taken from the report where it was published, so compare the scale rather than the exact order.
The most downloaded apps
Downloads tell a different story from revenue. In May 2026, Appfigures estimated that ChatGPT led worldwide downloads with about 61 million, followed by TikTok with about 43 million. In February 2026, Instagram was estimated at about 38 million and Google's Gemini at about 27 million.
The overlap between the two lists is small, which is itself a lesson. Some apps monetise heavily with modest download growth, such as Tinder and Google One. Others grow enormously and monetise through ads or later conversion. Your model should match your category: a utility with a clear, recurring value can charge early, while a social app needs scale before it can earn.
The US top-grossing chart
The US is the App Store's largest market by revenue, so its top-grossing chart is a useful lens. App Radar's snapshot of the US iPhone chart on 19 August 2026 listed, among others: ChatGPT at number one, YouTube at two, TikTok at three, Snapchat at four, MONOPOLY GO! at five, Royal Match at nine, Claude at ten, Candy Crush Saga at twelve, Disney+ at thirteen, Crunchyroll at fourteen, LinkedIn at fifteen, CapCut at seventeen, Duolingo at eighteen, Tinder at nineteen and Life360 at twenty.
Four games sat in that top twenty, alongside streaming, AI assistants, social, education and family safety. The variety is encouraging: there is no single category that owns App Store revenue.
Category by category: what the leaders do
AI assistants (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude). A single input field on the home screen, instant value with no setup, a generous free tier and a subscription for heavier use or better models. Conversation history doubles as a retention loop because users return to past chats.
Short video and social (TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat). Zero-friction onboarding that drops users straight into content, full-screen vertical feeds and monetisation through ads, virtual gifts and creator subscriptions. Snapchat adds a paid tier for power users.
Streaming (YouTube, Disney+, Crunchyroll). Poster-led browsing, a hero banner for new releases and "continue watching" at the top. Revenue comes from subscriptions, with ad-free tiers as an upgrade path.
Dating (Tinder). One card, one decision. Tiered subscriptions and consumable boosts, with daily limits that create a reason to return.
Education (Duolingo). A visible learning path, streaks that create daily habits and a freemium model where the paid tier removes friction rather than locking core learning.
Utilities (Google One, Life360). Value shown as a meter or map, tiered plans and family sharing that pushes upgrades. Life360's live family map makes the value obvious at a glance.
Games (MONOPOLY GO!, Royal Match, Candy Crush Saga). Short sessions, clear progress maps, boosters and limited-time events every week. The economy is designed so that paying feels like saving time rather than buying victory.
Creative tools (CapCut). Template-first editing so beginners succeed immediately, a trending templates feed for discovery and a Pro subscription for exports and advanced features.
Patterns shared by almost every top earner
Across categories, the same handful of decisions keeps appearing.
- Value before sign-up. The best apps let you experience the product before asking for an account. Sign-up appears when there is something to save.
- One primary action per screen. Whether it is a text box, a swipe or a play button, the main action is obvious and within thumb reach.
- A habit loop. Streaks, notifications, new episodes, daily puzzles or saved history give users a reason to come back tomorrow.
- A paywall that feels like the next step. Upgrades are offered at the moment the free experience runs out, not on launch.
- Relentless iteration on the store page. Screenshots and subtitles change frequently as teams test new messaging.
Our paywall teardown tool scores any paywall against these patterns, and the ASO keyword tool helps you draft a store page that leads with value.

What the data says about subscriptions
Most of the highest-earning non-game apps rely on subscriptions, so it is worth knowing what works. RevenueCat's 2026 State of Subscription Apps research reports that hard paywalls convert trials to paid at roughly five times the rate of freemium models by day 35, and generate about eight times more revenue per install by day 60. It also found that longer trials of 17 to 32 days convert about 70% better than trials under four days, even though the share of apps using very short trials is rising.
There is a warning too: AI apps earn a higher first-year value per user but their monthly plans churn faster than traditional apps. If you are building in AI, plan your retention loop as carefully as your paywall. Run your own numbers with the app revenue calculator.
Where the growth is in 2026
Top charts show who is winning today. Growth data shows where tomorrow's winners might come from. InsighTrackr's H2 2026 trends report found that short-drama apps grew downloads by about 95.5% year over year in the first half of 2026, the fastest of any category, while utilities reached about 12.1 billion downloads, up 25%. Appfigures data reported by TechCrunch showed new iOS app releases up 80% year over year in the first quarter, with productivity, utilities, lifestyle and health and fitness among the most active categories for launches.
Those are the categories where demand is expanding fastest, and where a focused, well-designed app has room to break through.
How to use these lessons in your own app
Studying the charts is only useful if it changes what you build. A practical approach looks like this. Pick the two or three top apps closest to your category. Write down how many screens each takes to reach value, when each asks for sign-up and payment, what the default plan is and what the first screenshot says. Then decide deliberately where you will follow the pattern and where you will differ.
Muaz.io automates most of that. Its competitor research engine analyses 5, 10 or 20 apps in your category, and the Top Charts screen in the dashboard lets you save any leader's patterns to your inspiration board. The design agent then builds an original interface informed by the patterns you chose.
A note on the screens shown
The phone previews on this page and in the Muaz.io dashboard are pattern illustrations drawn by Muaz.io. They show the type of layout each app uses, such as a vertical feed, a card stack or a learning path, not the apps' real screenshots, logos or branding. App names and trademarks belong to their owners and are used here only to describe published market data.
Reading app revenue estimates responsibly
Revenue estimates are models. Providers combine public signals such as chart positions, ratings, prices and known data points to estimate what an app earns. Their accuracy is usually best for the largest apps and broadest markets, and weaker for small apps in individual countries. Treat a figure as an order of magnitude and a trend, not as a reported number. Never present a competitor's estimate as fact in investor material, and never assume an app's profit from its revenue: acquisition costs, salaries and infrastructure are invisible from the outside.
Muaz.io labels every estimate with its provider, country, period and capture date, and shows "Unavailable" when no provider covers an app.
Build the next one
The next app on this chart will not be a copy of the current ones. It will solve a familiar problem with a faster path to value, a fairer paywall and a habit loop that people enjoy. If you have an idea or a website, paste it into the builder at the top of this page. Muaz.io will research your category, show you the patterns that work and design an original app you can test on your own iPhone today.
Top charts by category: where to look for your niche
The overall top-grossing chart is dominated by giants, but every category has its own chart, and that is where a new app can realistically compete. Here is how to use category charts in practice.
Productivity. AI assistants now lead the category, but below them sit note-taking, calendar, scanning and focus apps. The winners combine a single clear job with a subscription that unlocks power features. A focused tool for one profession, such as invoicing for freelancers, can rank well without competing with general assistants.
Health and fitness. Workout, nutrition, sleep and meditation apps rely on habits, streaks and progress charts. Charts here move with the seasons, with strong demand in January and before summer. Plan launches around those peaks.
Education. Language learning dominates, but test preparation, kids' learning and skills apps are large sub-markets. Streaks and visible learning paths are near-universal patterns.
Lifestyle. Dating, astrology, home and fashion apps mix subscriptions with consumable purchases. Visual design and a strong first impression matter more than in most categories.
Utilities. Storage, VPN, scanning, cleaning and family safety apps earn through subscriptions that solve a recurring need. InsighTrackr's data showing utilities reaching about 12.1 billion downloads in the first half of 2026 underlines how large this category is.
Photo and video. Editing and creative tools win with templates that let beginners succeed in seconds, and with trending content that keeps people coming back.
Games. Puzzle, casual and board-style games dominate grossing charts through live events and boosters. They require a very different skill set from most apps, so study their economy design carefully before entering.

What changed in the charts in 2026
Three shifts stand out this year. AI assistants moved from novelty to the top of both download and revenue charts, with ChatGPT leading worldwide downloads in May 2026 according to Appfigures. Short-drama apps became the fastest-growing category by downloads, according to InsighTrackr. And new iOS releases surged, with Appfigures data reported by TechCrunch showing an 80% year-over-year increase in the first quarter, which means more competition for attention in every category.
For a new app, the implication is clear: differentiation and a strong store presence matter more than ever. A crowded market rewards apps with a clear position, a polished first screenshot and a keyword strategy that targets winnable searches. Our free ASO keyword tool and screenshot generator help with both.
How to track the charts yourself
You do not need a paid tool to follow the charts. The App Store app shows top free, top paid and top grossing lists by category in each country. Check them weekly for your category and note new entrants, rising apps and apps that drop out. Read the update notes of rising apps to see what changed. Over a few months, you will build an intuition for what moves rankings in your niche. When you want sourced estimates and history, connect a market data provider in Muaz.io or read the monthly reports from Appfigures cited on this page.
Using the charts to pick an app idea
If you do not yet have an idea, the charts are a good place to find one. Look for categories where the top apps have high revenue but mediocre ratings, which suggests unmet demand. Look for apps whose reviews repeatedly ask for the same missing feature. Look for successful apps aimed at a broad audience that could be specialised for a profession, age group or country. Then validate the idea with a full competitor research run and model the economics with the revenue calculator before you build.
From chart insight to your own launch plan
Turning chart insights into a plan takes three steps. First, choose the two or three patterns from the leaders that fit your app, such as value before sign-up or a habit loop. Second, choose one thing you will do differently and better, which becomes your positioning. Third, plan your store page around that difference: the first screenshot, the subtitle and the keyword field. Muaz.io's App Store Studio and Growth Studio turn that plan into assets and experiments, and the how it works guide shows where each step fits in the build.
Frequently overlooked chart lessons
Updates matter. Top apps ship updates constantly. Regular updates signal an active product to users and keep your app fresh in the eyes of reviewers and editors. Even small improvements, described clearly in release notes, help.
Ratings are earned at the right moment. The leaders ask for ratings after a moment of success, never in the middle of a task. A steady stream of recent, positive ratings supports both ranking and conversion.
Localisation is a growth lever. Many top apps localise their store pages and interfaces into dozens of languages. For a smaller app, translating metadata and screenshots for two or three markets with clear demand can open new chart positions with little engineering work.
Events keep apps visible. Games pioneered limited-time events, and many non-game apps now use in-app events for challenges, live sessions and seasonal content. Events can appear in search and on your product page, giving the app fresh visibility.
Pricing is never finished. Leaders test plan structures, trial lengths and price points continuously. RevenueCat's 2026 research on trial length and paywall type is a good starting point for your own tests, and our paywall teardown helps you check the basics first.

What is the highest-earning app in 2026?
According to Appfigures' published estimates, TikTok was the highest-earning app worldwide in May 2026 with about $300 million in net revenue across the App Store and Google Play, followed by ChatGPT at about $201 million. These are modelled estimates of revenue after store fees.
What is the most downloaded app in 2026?
Appfigures estimates that ChatGPT was the most downloaded app worldwide in May 2026 with about 61 million downloads, ahead of TikTok at about 43 million.
Are these revenue numbers exact?
No. They are third-party estimates published by Appfigures based on modelled data. They are useful for understanding scale and trends but should not be read as reported financials. Apple does not publish per-app revenue.
Where do the US top-grossing ranks come from?
US ranks on this page come from App Radar's published snapshot of the US App Store top-grossing chart dated 19 August 2026. Ranks change daily, so treat them as a moment in time.
Can a new app compete with these apps?
Not head-on, but you do not need to. The value of studying top earners is in their patterns: short paths to value, clear paywalls, strong retention loops. Those patterns work at any scale, and most categories have room for focused apps that serve a niche better than a giant.
How often is this page updated?
We refresh the figures when the underlying providers publish new monthly reports. Each figure on this page shows the month it refers to.
